Spotlighted Ongoing Opportunities For March

Besides offering Hands On calendar projects, we also encourage our partners to post ongoing volunteer opportunities in need of a longer term commitment. If you're interested in getting engaged in the community on an ongoing basis and want to use or hone your skills set, check out some of our new and updated volunteer opportunities below!

Abernethy Elementary Garden of Wonders Program
The Garden of Wonders aims to "create a sense of wonder about food, the way food grows and its place in the larger ecosystem". We do this by maintaining a school garden and teaching classes about the garden, environmental stewardship, and issues relating to sustainability to grades K-5 at Abernethy Elementary School (PPS) in Ladd's Addition. We are currently looking for enthusiastic volunteers who are interested in helping with the Garden of Wonders class sessions.

At Abernethy Elementary, Chef Nicole works hard to create delicious, homey meals for all of the students, incorporating produce, meats, and other products from local providers and Abernethy’s very own Garden of Wonders (Swiss Chard pesto, anyone?). But the kitchen needs help! Loved and revered by the students, Chef James can only do so much … and that’s where you come in!

Catholic Charities
The MIOS Program is currently recruiting volunteers for day and evening childcare. Our program is aimed at providing mental health services for members of the Spanish speaking community who are uninsured.The women in these programs attend support groups and they need responsible, caring volunteers to watch their children.

Quest Center for Integrative Health
Do you like filing papers? Are you looking for more experience in a medical office setting? Then we have the opportunity for you! Help our non-profit medical clinic by assisting our medical records clerk. We have several 4 hour am or pm slots available.

Art on Alberta
Art on Alberta is organizing a mural volunteer team for our upcoming Art Hop. Muralists Rodolfo Serna, Adriene Cruz and Esteban Camacho will be organizing projects to be painted by area youth groups and the attending public during our annual Art Hop event on May 15, 2010. We need a team of volunteers who can help us gather paint for the muralists before the event, prepare surfaces, and assist the muralists during the day of Art Hop.

Peninsula Children's Center
Create an Enrichment Kit for the children at our nonprofit daycare and early childhood education center, as a service project with family or friends. An Enrichment Kit is a selection of items related to a theme; together they support integrated learning, promote literacy and develop social skills.

Albertina Kerr Centers
Kerr is currently seeking a research volunteer to find scholarship opportunities for youth transitioning from High School to Technical School, college or university, specifically youth involved in Kerr's Foster Care Program. This position can be done from home.

motiveSpace Coalition
The MotiveSpace Coalition is a nonprofit association of builders and community leaders whose mission is to promote inclusive and sustainable common spaces for our neighborhoods. We are seeking a dedicated volunteer to join our team, and provide executive support to our Board.

Quest Center for Integrative Health
Do you like driving people around? Then come help our hungry clients get some food, by driving them to Esther's Pantry. We need a volunteer the 1st and 3rd Tuesday every month from 2-4 pm.

Quest Center for Integrative Health
Do you want to help with feeding hungry people? We need a team of volunteers every Thursday at noon, for about 40 minutes to an hour. Help us get the food from Whole foods (across the street from us) and sort it, so that we can cook dinner and distribute the remainder to out homeless and hungry clientele.

Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives, Inc. (PCRI)
Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community development organization providing affordable rental housing to families in north and northeast Portland. PCRI is currently seeking volunteers to teach our residents yoga at the Park Terrace Community Center. Teachers must be certified or working towards their certification.

Albertina Kerr Centers
Help Kerr's growing Foster Care program by providing supervised child care with other staff and volunteers during weekly foster parent trainings.Two shifts available: 10a.m. – 12p.m. or 7p.m. – 9p.m. Book clubs will meet twice per week for a 10-week series.

Marshall SUN School
Interested in making a difference in the lives of SE Portland youth? Volunteer to be a class leader or mentor with the Marshall High School SUN program! The SUN program (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) at the Marshall Campus seeks to improve the lives of children, families, and community by providing extended-day classes for students, and family events for the community.
